ALEX SCHWEDER

ITS FORM WILL FOLLOW YOUR PERFORMANCE

November 27 - December 27, 2012: Residency

February 14 - March 1, 2013: Solo Exhibition

OPUS Projects is pleased to host and collaborate with Alex Schweder and present works from his architectural performance, ‘ITS FORM WILL FOLLOW YOUR PERFORMANCE’, Alex Schweder’s current endeavor.  An opening reception will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013 from 6 - 8 pm.

During this month-long performance Schweder will offer free architectural advice to any visitor who seeks a renovation of their apartment through the addition of performance to it.  Each architectural performance will be specifically developed for and with the participant through conversations taking place in the gallery about their relationship to where they live and to others who live there that are affected by the space.  Through theses renovations Schweder seeks to alter the architecture through a change in how the space is performed and perceived.

As Alex Schweder describes in a recent article in the British Journal POST:

“Imagine asking an architect to renovate your home, but you have next to no budget, or you have restrictive regulations about what walls, windows, and doors can be changed in your building, no likely possibility of expanding the physical limits of your space.  For many of us living in dense urban environments, that is an easy speculation that puts of seeking such professional advice. However, what I the architect you approach doesn’t see these factors as constraints, if that architect suggests a substantial change in your home merely by acting differently in it, that you can be as playful and inventive with this newly renovated behavior as you imagine Frank Gehry is with architectural form; and that the impact on your home through changing the way you behave within it will be as profound as an addition to it?  Radical transformations like these are precisely what are possible when architecture is conceived of in tandem with performance.”

Visitors will also be able to experience his performance architecture at the Tate in London opening - February 1, 2013. Selected works from this show will also be on view at OPUS Projects February 14 - March 1 with an exhibition of works associated with 'Its Form Will Follow Your Performance'.
